Allotment 38B
November 24, 2006
It might seem like a small beginning but this is our ticket to becoming landed gentry!
Last weekend we finally got through the waiting list and have scored ourselves 60 square m of land on fantastic fenland soils. This place used to be a giant wetland (probably incredibly beautiful and teaming with wildlife but oh well) but now it’s all farmland and the soils are an incredible black peat. It’s like growing your veggies in pure potting mix!
So far we’ve dug two rows and planted some spring onions but it’s wintertime. Just wait for spring! There are a few weeds right now but their days are numbered.

Dear Ira & Jan,
Looks like a fun place to be, at the allotment planting seeds. In Australia we are currently picking cabbages, tomatoes, beetroot and waiting for corn, onions and apricots.

Well .. we’ll be waiting a while before our harvest :). We put in some garlic yesterday .. but sadly our onions didn’t come up. It’s not really the right time to plant anything over here .. but we’re experimenting so that when summer comes we’ve got our technique down pat.
Hey do you guys use fertilizer? We’re thinking we should plough some manure into one of our beds a month or two before we start planting our beetroots and stuff.

Maybe you could follow the Ely ducks down the street and gather their product I am sure it would contain many nutrients.
Ira
Yes indeed .. very high in phosphate! .. the only problem is infiltrating the duck’s lair. They are not ducks you want to mess with.
